I used to catch lizards as an 8 year old and then torture them with mexican cartel tier unspeakable violence. I think about it everyday and the guilt made me very angry with myself, I barely leave the house anymore because I feel disgusting even 20 years later.

Forgive yourself. We all increase in wisdom as we go through life and you know better than you did at 8. Live again and do something good for animals or the environment.

Don't try to catch the lizard, rather, catch the air in front of the lizard. By the time your hand connects, the lizard will have moved forward and you will catch it. I learnt this playing with my cat as a kid and hunting lizards together.
You shouldn't keep lizards as pets though, you'll just make them suffer. Grab one, play with it, then let it go free.

Just leave the lizards alone and enjoy them in their own habitat.
Catching and keeping wild animals is cruel.
You won't care for it properly and give it the right food. It will be too hot/cold/stressed and die in misery.

after spending my childhood catching lizards, I decided it's too much work and built a rock stack in full sun in the yard with broken pieces of slate. I then watch them with a binocular from the porch whenever they are out and I have time

You just grab them by their stomach fast, like so (pic related). My nephew that's 6 runs around and catches a few every day for fun, a lot of them will detach their tails and try to zoom off. A lot of them will also bite but they don't bite hard, also if you grab them in a specific way (by their stomach with their face protruding outwards) they aren't able to bite. For pleasure I've went around grabbing brown anole lizards with my nephew and I've picked up a fair sum of them, only once being bitten and that being among the first times I went hunting for them.

Here's a visual demonstration of the form I would use roughly, you can see the three fingers would enclose the lizard's body, the thumb would be used to push on the back of it's head so it can't bite you, the finger is initially put a little away but once the lizard is thoroughly in your bondage you can pull the finger back.

I have overcomplicated the matter but I have caught hundreds of brown anole lizards, one thing to note is that if done correctly, they won't detach their tails. They will detach their tails usually as a survival mechanism to get away, if you've caught them thoroughly, they'll know on some level that the game is up, that they can't escape, so they won't detach their tail.

I've never killed a lizard and neither has my nephew, he's far rougher than me. Don't worry about it. Their bite is very weak, barely registerable.

I used to catch lizards as a kid, but I don't do it anymore, because I don't want to risk breaking off their tails. They look so ugly with the replacement tails, not aesthetic at all.

Find wet areas with lots of stones or debris that you can upturn

I spent years catching lizards of all sorts with my barehands. The trick is to be fast but also gentle - kind of swiftly but gently press them into the floor with your palm or fingers and then manoeuvre them into your hand. They will bite, so be prepared.

I could catch it easily if it involved harming it or killing it. But I don't want to harm it

This only works for really small and slow species. For the faster ones you sometimes have to corner them or wait outside their dens and then
