CAN I TAKE HIM HOME

SAW A RANDOM CAT SITTING ON A BUSH SOMEWHERE IN THE TOWN CENTER AT 1AM, NEAR A CENTRAL STATION AND SHOPS AND HOUSES IN A 1KM DISTANCE. HE LOOKED LONELY AND I DIDN'T SEE A COLLAR, IS IT SAFE TO ASSUME HE'S A STRAY? CAN I TAKE HIM HOME?

There is almost nowhere in America where letting a cat run wild is legal. If the cat has no collar and is just wandering around outside, enjoy. It's your cat now if you want it.

Yes. Big pet corporation doesnt want you to know this, but cats are literally free. I never paid for one.

Just take him. Obviously if someone couldn't bother to put a collar on him or keep him from wandering outside alone they wouldn't be a good owner anyways.

A lot of people don't put a collar on their cat in fear it would get caught in a tree and suffocate the cat.

Why is their cat so poorly supervised that could even happen? That's "my dog wears snowshoes so they don't fall into a spike pit trap" tier.

Like other anons said check for a microchip

Cats choking on collars, even the breakaway ones is common so most indoor cats don't wear them

it doesnt really matter. if a cat is that far away from home it has horrible owners. take it and make it an indoor only cat. don't forget to neuter/spay, vaccintae, check for diseases, etc.

that's how i got my cat and he's been an angel since he stopped meowing to go out.

Maybe? Take him to the vet first and get him checked for a microchip, if he doesn't have one and there aren't any posters around town or online (in your local area) that look like him then you're good to go.

Of course you can take him home in the meantime and get him off the street and away from getting hit by a car, but get him checked for a chip and make sure he's not someone else's missing cat before you full on commit to keeping him forever.
