I was considering getting a BC or Aus but I have no idea a how to even be find a trustworthy breeder. Didn't know about the these light eye/merle problems until now. I just want a healthy medium sized dog that will do well with chickens and sheep, maybe bark at foxes, but not overheat in the FL sun.

any reputable breeder will have up to date health records and screenings for their dogs. if you're that worried about double merles then just look for one that breeds non merles only, there are plenty of those around

There are no known genetic causes of epilepsy in dogs, CCD included, and collies have a sudden deafness issue breeders can’t test for either. However, outcrossing usually makes them go away.

My borther has a 100% pure bred akc etc Border Collie and let me tell you the thing is kind of a dick to every other dog, it has an annoying piercing bark, crazy long hair and smells like shit with knots all over, only listens to one person, doesnt listen that well in general, like to bark at everything mowers, trash trucks, sirens, blowers, etc.
Meanwhile my Bogle never barks and generally is lazier and more relaxed and still listens better albeit dogs are generally bad listeners and also has less fear of things, willing to jump into rivers from high, leap edge to edge while the collie is a b***h and takes the easy way down etc.

Wanted to get a Border as first dog, living in a house with a garden, doing 20-25 min of bike every day.

I like his looks and its ease of learning.

But I don't want to bore him to death as I work a long period of time (10-11hr per day), should I get an Aussie instead ? What's the downside compare to a border ?

Border Collies are just too easy to massively over-correct. I like being able to say "No" just a little bit sharply without it shutting the dog down. Don't get me wrong, intelligent, biddable dogs are wonderful, but there's a degree of sensitivity that becomes more of a hindrance than anything. It's too easy to accidentally teach really sensitive dogs like that fear, every experience really does need to be positive because they have so little resilience.

Why are subcanine creatures so similar to sheep and cattle?

An anon once posted some info about how blue eyed dogs with light coats and merle pattern are a result of lethal white gene inbreeding and I can't look at these dogs the same.

It's the ones that are majority white specifically. All merle dogs have the potential to produce litters if the breeder isn't very savvy or if, god forbid, dogs mate without the consent of the breeder (the horror!). A lot of purebred dogs are so genetically fricked that can't be allowed to happen. Also, there are cryptic merles that breeders mistake for non-merles all the time, resulting in double merles. Not that it matters. Breeders will purposefully breed double merles because if they stud them out to non merles they get 100% merle money maker litters.

That's not even as bad as bobtails normally bred for by aussie homosexuals. A double merle puppy will still live. A double bobtail puppy dies in the womb or shortly after birth, most likely in pain, from spinal defects.

Sheepdog breeders need to calm the frick down and stop worrying about pretty colors, missing tails, and floppy ears so much. The dogs would look better with pointy ears, full tails carried correctly (wolves never had problems with elk stepping on their shit), and normal coats anyways.

Belgian Malinois have long been bred as working dogs and do not originate from pit bull ancestry. In fact, the Belgian Malinois is one of the few breeds that do not have any history of being used as fighting dogs.

Belgian Malinois is actually a cross between a Belgian Sheepdog and a German Shepherd.

Instead, these agencies require that pit bulls be temperament tested and meet certain breed standards before they are given to an officer or soldier. Additionally, pit bulls that work in law enforcement or the military typically serve as support animals, not as working dogs.

Even if malinois were bred into pit bulls, this would not create a pit bull-type dog. Pit bulls are a specific type of American Staffordshire terrier, and while malinois and Staffordshire terriers share some notable physical features, they are also very different dog breeds. Thus, even if pit bulls were bred into malinois, the resulting hybrid would not be a true pit bull.

Who would breed a monstrosity like this. How evil do you have to be.

              Anonymous

Pitbulls are not smart enough for military work. Malinois are somehow not aggressive enough and also have some interest in staying alive, which is not wanted for the military. The result is a more energetic and suicidal dog with less intelligence. Energy minus intelligence equals drive. The dog isn't capable of thoughts but still has a need for activity, so it is completely directionless until conditioned.

Basically all police/military "malinois" are about 25% pitbull. The actual belgian dog looks and acts completely different.

          Anonymous

Border collies have tons of empathy. They're just overridden with their "working drive" if it's not satisfied.

If you want a dog without empathy get any primitive dog, husky, shiba, etc. They relate to humans so poorly that they can't understand pointing gestures.

there are plenty more empathic dogs out there
i also dont think theyre that loyal
their focus gives their owner a false sense of loyalty but theyll listen to and obey the next guy that comes around just as intently

i want my dog to scream at and pee on any homosexual that tries to tell him what to do

              Anonymous

Border collies are probably the most empathetic one if they calm down for 10 seconds. Their entire purpose is working together with a human. That's what makes dogs more doggy than wolfy. Wolves are smarter than the best sheepdog but can't learn by watching a human even if it's extremely simple, they can only empathize with other animals. A properly doggy dog can't learn by watching another dog but they can learn extremely well by watching a person and border collies are the absolute doggiest dogs.

                Anonymous

They're too high strung, reactive, and even prey driven to be service dogs for most people. They're also recommended against being service dogs for some people because they're so empathetic they feed off your negative emotions as strongly as your positive ones. Goldens are a better fit. They're neither as intelligent nor empathetic, but extremely docile and just smart and empathetic enough for it not to be a problem.

                >following commands isn't empathy
You've never dealt with one. They don't just follow commands. They are finely attuned to their handlers, so much that your pleasure or frustration is reinforcement to them. Border collies are always looking at you. Border collies know how you feel. Border collies feel you.

Your idea of a normal collie is skewed or you failed to recognize a lot of border collies as border collies. There are champion lines in 99% of places. The dogs aren't champions until they go to trials but there are still lines that produce more champions than others and lines that have never had a dog go to trials and the dogs act like it. They are far from normal.

Thinking of getting a beagle or something. More of a cat person but I like dogs too and beagles seem pretty chill on top of being a healthy breed. An old friend of mine had a beagle named Basil and he was a total bro
Collies are kewl though, my next door neighbours have a collie and two kelpies/shepherd or whatever. I remember one day the cheeky c**t collie and the smaller kelpie managed to crawl under the fence into my yard. Had to do a double take when I looked out the window and saw them. It was funny as frick. Had to go out and help them get beck under. Love playing with those dogs whenever I go over there.
The smaller kelpie is kind of moronic but always managed to get to the ball first. Perks of having being closer to the ground and having the determination I guess. Unfortunately the old girl has gone blind but at least she's still got a loving home

The reason there's dog poop in my water system is that people insist in having those filthy mutts to satisfy their control issues

Certain dog breeds actually CAN (doesn't mean you just "should" though), Malinois is not one of them. They can't even be trusted for GSD style general Police work

Agree but we should also obliterate cats as well since toxoplasmosis kills off more infants.

        guarding/protecting

      >bootlicker

That's exactly how dogs are supposed to be.
Is this how pitbull owners talk about other dogs?

        >dogs are supposed to be slaves without any personality because i have control issues
all dogs not being used for security or farm work today are useless pets. pitbulls, huskies, retrievers, bullies, most mastiffs, hounds, etc, they exist for fun and cuddles. if you think a dog needs to be a bootlicker when its not a dangerous one it’s mostly about your small penis.

the only dogs that need to be licking boots are the ones with lives or greenbacks riding on them obeying when told every single time.
