Best & Worst Animal Fathers

Learning the harsh truth about bears made me burn my "Why a Son Needs a Dad" and my "Why a Daughter Needs a Dad" book, because of the mythical "papa bear" on the cover.

Of course, we know penguins are the best.

Not an expert but I'll take a stab. Dogs are pack animals, but aren't *generational* pack animals due to their cohabitation with humans. It is essential for wolves' survival to maintain pack cohesion over generations, which means deadbeat/violent dads get the boot one way or another. But if any wolf experts would like to step in & refute, I'd like to hear it.

    >Hard truth is, XYs are not really useful after they spread their semen. In majority of animals that is the only purpose. Even in human the XY lives shorter life and causes nearly all the trouble. You see it in, colony insects where XYs is only produced soon before Queen dies and they do not last long after mating. Otherwise they serve purpose. Other proof is Parthogen animals where there is only female sex. They get by fine relying on random mutation for genetic difference. >Often, they fight, causing injury or even killing one another. The dominant male attempts to prevent other males from breeding. A female approaches the group of males by swimming along at the surface until she is within a few metres of the group. Then, the female dives to avoid the smaller males and surfaces in the defended area of a larger male in the middle of the group. This helps to ensure that she mates with the dominant male.[15][17]

Social insects don’t work this way. Bees, wasps, and ants only have one sex chromosome; with females having a pair and males just having only one (unfertilized eggs produce males, fertilized eggs make females). The queen also produces males throughout her life, not just at the end.
Termites have weird and complicated sex chromosomes, also produce males throughout the queen’s life, and the males aren’t killed by fucking either like bees.

wait a second, does that mean every colony or hive insect male that fucks is a literal motherfucker? ew.

        Anonymous

no no ant queens can produce both double and single chromosome males but workers can only produce single chromosome males leading to their supremely complicated geneology chart

while I dont agree with the "XY is useless" guy he is right colony males are generally useless to the overall function of the colony

      Anonymous

Too much implications in that. Besides, it is fewer letters.

Fun fact, on chickens females are the ones with odd chromosomes, not males.

Anyway sexual reproduction allows genes to be mixed and shuffled. By random mutation individual 1 get a beneficial trait A and individual 2 get beneficial trait B. Without sexual reproduction the only way for an individual getting both is their having the absurdly low chance of getting the exact same mutation the other had and then generations of natural selection and added mutations to optimize it like the other did. With sexual reproduction the individual genes are not tied to a single generational line and can move sideways by combining and mixing with other individuals.

That's only if you see child-rearing as "more useful" than being physically strong, building things, and fighting wars, which I'd argue it isn't, considering men are just as capable of raising children. If anything, females are the useless ones beyond providing milk, nevermind the semen thing.

Anon, that only applies to people who live in civilized societies. In the animal kingdom, the vast majority of males in a species do nothing other than coom. The females grow the baby, birth it or lay the eggs, raise the babies, and oftentimes end up sacrificing themselves for the babies. this is the animal kingdom, the natural world here, not human society

          Anonymous

Seems disingenuous to say the males only coom when there's a sizeable chunk of the species pie that have to do elaborate stupid bullshit just to attract the females in the first place, things encouraged by the females in the first place by consistently choosing for it.

They don't just coom, they carry out incomprehensible amounts of violence so that they, and they alone, can coom. Pre-state humans are like this as well.

Pigeons are pretty great fathers too (really being present alone makes a father above average in the animal kingdom), and they can provide crop milk themselves so the parents can do rotations attending to the nest. A lot of the more familiar bird species have pretty good fathers.

Most of the worst fathers in the animal kingdom are going to be mammals, who generally exhibit greater rates of intraspecific violence. The bear lifestyle of living alone, only being social to mate, and then killing every other kid you can get your hands on seems to be shared among many other species. Even humans were depressingly close to this in some ways in pre-state societies.

      >decent thread gets derailed within like 5 posts by someone who thinks their 12th grade understanding of biology is deep
