This cross has happened historically. The Rhodesian ridgeback is 50% Mastiff, and 50% Hound in terms of its foundation stock where Mastiffs, Greyhounds, Great Danes, and Bloodhounds.

You're right, it would be more accurate and polite not to associate them with braindead, deformed automatons like mastiffs.
