Which is more believable: talking snakes, jealous angry gods who demand foreskins, people turning into salt and flying into the sky; or birds?
I rest my case.
The bible has little importance and could be reduced to 1/10th the size by removing the irrelevant fables and flowery manipulation. So PFGtB is much more important than the bible.
You're ignorant. Nothing from the old Testament has ever been necessary since Christ arrived. I'm sorry your mom circumcised you, but it wasn't because of Christianity. Sounds gnomish to me.
Hubris like I said. >technology has improved therefore religion is irrelevant
You're not more enlightenment or special just because you were born in an age of comfort. Hedonism is not a virtue. The point of religion has never been to maximize individual comfort, but to care for society on matters of deep importance, including salvation. >le evil religion wars
Human nature is the same as it has been for thousands of years, it's only the circumstances that have changed.
And wars, just as they are as they have been since time immemorial, are driven primarily by economic and geopolitical reasons.
If a state appropriates religiosity to justify a war, it's not the fault of religion itself. Propoganda always exists in some form. If anything, it's the benefit of religion to instill values of pacifism to prevent needless violence. >And I didn't derail shit. This thread doesn't even really have a topic.
Yeah right, this was a nice thread about bird watching books and you ruined it. You had to sperg out and bait me into replying. Now look at us.
>Quality of life increases 100x while religion fades away >No more pointless religious wars since governments stopped being run by churches
Yeah, more necessary than ever because we're going through a demographic speed bump so growth is only 1% instead of 3%. Fucking vultures, preying on the weak of mind is what you are. And I didn't derail shit. This thread doesn't even really have a topic.
>Quality of life increases 100x while religion fades away
When religion fades away so does the only stable basis for morality we have. Since all existence is arbitrary without a creator to give it purpose, morality becomes the plaything of the powerful and everyone else is around for the ride with no recourse, no chance to point back at the scripture, nothing close to proof of right and wrong whatsoever, and society collapses within the century. Some naturally nice and intelligent people have it good for a short while since they're no longer being stifled by rules made for primitive retards 2000 years ago, and then it all comes tumbling down because the majority is neither nice nor intelligent and the people leading the various factions they form are intelligent, but definitely not nice.
Our only chance at salvation is a second messiah. As it was foretold. If moses was rejected, christ was rejected, and smith and muhammad were laughed out of the club, who's next? If you have any heart and any mind you will find a good messiah and help him so the next batch of rules for retards to endure for a few thousand years is at least a good one. Because if you don't it's going to be a hindu warlord since their self fulfilling prophecy is that this is the age of ultimate darkness and horrible death.
Nope. Don't need your god to give morality. Many culture have existed without monotheism and without a god who prescribed moral behavior, yet they still operated well, and they gave the abrahamics their moral grounding. Christian morality has ALWAYS been arbitrary and has been changed over time by the powerful, who were said to be speaking the word of god directly. lmao okay. And scripture, what a joke. It's so contradictory from constant revisions that you can draw basically any conclusion you want about a topic ,like reading a horoscope. Who decides what is the word in the bible tea leaves and what is blasphemy? The powerful of the day do. It's actually a far better way of centralizing power behind narcissists than democracy is. Despite all its failings, democracy at least makes the narcissists constantly fight each other for power.
We're doing fine, and we'll keep doing fine. All societies go through cycles of renewal where people like you cry that it's The End. It will be fine, and you won't remember it being fine in 15 years when you start crying End at the next cycle's start. Get a grip. Religion is dead and finished and we won't be worshipping any leech messiah.
society without religion is "what the big man says goes"
disorganized religion is belief in powerful spirits that need to be kept pleased
then that is whittled down to a few very important spirits
and then you go back to step one
which i think you like because you're betting the big man will be cool with you fucking ostriches

>what the big man says goes
Honestly it would all be going a lot better if this was the case now
How? If biblical teachings help prevent hubris even hypothetically, then it makes sense that I'd say they are still relevant when someone is acting huburistic.
This would be circular reasoning: >The bible is important because it's important to read the bible.
This is not: >the bible is important because it helps prevent hubris in men.
>you believe you don't need to eat healthy food, therefore you need healthy food.
... which is correct.
People can become more or less huburistic for a variety of reasons, and I wasn't implying that it's specifically for his lack of bible study that he's huburistic.
Rather, I only conjecture that the bible is still beneficial today if he is any indication of how some people think (i.e. "I'm automatically superior to those who came before me"), because I believe that assumption is wrong.
so the bible cures a "vice" that it defines as vice and everyone else thinks is virtue?
so, like, the bible defines virtues as vices and then offers to cure them?
No, hubris or arrogance is pretty much universally considered a bad thing, even by atheists.

Thats part of what makes it a vice. I don't think hypocrisy can ever be a good thing. I believe people should act good towards others universally.
This is fundamentally wrong. Unless your idea of society is very authoritarian or hyper-progressive.
Also I'm not sure you understand the way me and the other anon were arguing. In your hypothetical, fries being good and also used by great people in the past is not a contradiction. Use ">" too.
You're mistaking arrogance for confidence. Pride goes before the fall. I wouldn't expect a relationship founded on literal arrogance to last very long.
Healthy food being virtues that can be universally agreed upon regardless of your background. This relates to my first response in this post towards >4213592.
Immanuel Kant introduced a concept called the Categorical Imperative. Basically, every human is an end in and of themselves, and to treat them as a means to an end is wrong, because it is not universally acceptable. The egoist cannot live in a 100% egoist society because it is not sustainable. On the flip side, an altruist is justified acting altruistic because it is sustainable if he and all others do so.
I believe this is the same for other virtues besides just altruism too.

The bible tells me that i should kill gay men even though they can contribute to society and oppression may make them hostile to me and my way of life. Countries without this problem that mostly ignored fags ie: japan also never had globohomo until the fags from the bible-infested west started pushing it on them. Clearly not all of the bible is healthy. Maybe we should just make them use condoms and avoid extreme sex. Oh well, too late, society is fucked from too much junk food and won’t be in shape any time soon.

Calm down son, the only one telling you to kill gay men is the FBI.
Globohomo is the result of two things: a certain merchant-class ethno-religion and the industrial revolution. One begets the other. You didn't see Weimar-Germany level degeneracy in poor Armenia, which has always been one of the most Christian nations on earth.
Well, America has both those things in high amount, especially following WW2.
Japan is industrialized, but has so far been lucky to prevent widespread infection from the other contributing factor. Some may say it's only a matter of time, but I hope not.

You also saw a consistent level of "degeneracy" throughout history in other successful civilizations. But it was not the acts themselves, it was that they were considered entirely recreational. Globohomo pushes degeneracy as an exclusive lifestyle that is meant to aggressively replace reproduction and the family unit. It is not the act that is degenerate but using it to destroy society.
Christianity is the other extreme, where people are commandment to put their fellows to death for "degeneracy".

Right, for example Kant didn't use the bible in any of his reasonings that I know of. Marcus Aurelius was an incredibly virtuous non-Christian. This isn't very controversial.
Christianity is the other extreme, where people are commandment to put their fellows to death for "degeneracy".
I don't think you're internalizing what I said. Gays don't act out more because they're persecuted against -- we've seen more LGBTQ+ bullshit following 2015 (gay marriage legalized) than before it, and it's only getting worse as they're accepted more and more. If society lessened it's dependance on religion entirely, we would still have globohomo and progressive ideology in America.
Although, you're right about one thing: globohomo is a tool against the traditional family unit. You have to then ask yourself, who benefits from fracturing society this way? I alluded to them earlier.
I could write more but I don't want to ramble. Let me know if you need more clarification.
