One of the hedgies that comes to my garden is such a fat boy. Nearly 1,5 kg. I usually tease it a bit to make it ball up a few times. I think of it as his little gym session.

You do realize that being highly social is what led to cavemen and other early hominids not going extinct, and eventually conquering the planet, right?
I mean, how antisocial and murderous could they have been, if they lived together in caves as the name suggests?

    Figured I could ask here.
Some weeks ago I found a dead hedgehog in the yard, it was not injured and in a normal position as if it just stopped walking. It was medium-small sized mostly leaning to small.
What do you think happened? Lost its parents?

Post a pic if you have any.
      Any idea of its weight?
      >Lost its parents?
Unless it was <200g it was on its own.
Most likely cause is poisoning because of gardering products. Anti-snail is particularly lethal for them because they eat poisoned snails.
Remember that hedgies are lactose intolerant (gives them lethal diarrhea) and bread can kill them too.

I'll take a pic tomorrow when it's morning, hope the corpse is still in a decent status. I'll try to pick it up and estimate its weight.
I doubt it could be poisoning because here there aren't private gardens, it is all wild grass, paths with weed, bushes and trees to divide the flats. It died in a corner of the common yard of my building that nobody but me uses (to visit the local cats).
There were so many hedgehogs in the past, this year I have seen one or two.

So here is the pic I promised. The body was covered with soil and dirt due to the recent rain, I didn't want to dig it up. For a size comparison to better understand how big it is, my shoe size in the pic is 37 (EU).
I think it might have weighted 200g if I think about it.

I knew this post was coming.

It was definitely a young. It will remain a sad mystery.
I saw a few in my garden tonight. They seem to hate the rain but the call of the peanuts is too strong, I guess.

Yeah I don't understand. Maybe it was born sick or something. If I had seen it earlier I would have acted to save it.
Good thing there are hedgehogs where you live at least.

Yeah, maybe. As weird as it sounds, I've also read that some rare hedgies can be suicidal (eating their own limbs or lying belly up until death). Bless you for looking after them.
I'll take a pic tonight unless they resist coming for food (they won't).

I don't think that's something that can happen unless the animal is terminally sick

Feeding a fig to a small hedgehog in Croatia, 2017
I found it in an area where Erinaceus roumanicus and Erinaceus europaeus populations intersect so it's hard to determine the species

Oh, didn't know they enjoyed figs. I'll buy one to try on the ones I see at night.
How comes this one was out in broad daylight?

                >Oh, didn't know they enjoyed figs
They're very opportunistic polygayes, I think they'd accept most fruit. Most of their diet is animal-based though.
                >How comes this one was out in broad daylight?
I don't know, it's very rare to see them during the day.
I was sitting on a log watching the sea when the hedgehog suddely came out of the log's cavity looking a bit drowsy and slow. Maybe it just wanted a quick snack before going back to sleep.

Indeed they are, but they're very peculiar? A few months ago I bought a box of mealworms because I read they'd enjoy it, but no one among my nightly rascals had any interest in those juicy worms, even the hedgies that I can feed by hand.
