I think they're not homeotherms. Better to place a lamp or a small heather for him. The best you can do.

I can't kill it. If it can recover I want it to recover. Can i put a few grains of epsom salt and water in a milk jug cap and set his body in it? I'm actually serious, I want this hairy boi to make it. It's the first wild tarantula I've ever seen and I stepped on it :(( I didn't get my full weight on it, it was like under my big toe, enough that I felt him under my shoe, I though I stepped on a frog which would have been bad but this is worse! I feel pretty shitty about this.

cause I dont want a crow or anything else to snatch him up while he heals, even if it dies it won't be from my lack of trying to save it. Spiders are guardians of man, sent from God himself to defend us from legions of bugs who would eat our food and spread disease, spiders are so underappreciated. I have a fairly large garden and the spiders have kept me from having to use pesticides. There are no less than 1000 daddy long legs patrolling my tomatoes right now. In the spring I started getting aphids, I was gonna spray but decided to wait a couple weeks cause I hadn't seen many spiders yet, sure enough as it warmed up the spiders came and ate all the aphids. I live in the sticks in zone 7b, we get lots of wildlife around here, but I'd never encountered a tarantula till yesterday. I just moved here a couple years ago so I am still getting used to my environment, but I will say I have more spiders and frogs on my property than I have ever seen anywhere. I catch rainwater for my crops and sometime the frogs will drop eggs in there and me being me, I let them spawn and drop their tails before using the water. I doubt I will get any serious replies at this point, oh well, Lord knows I tried.

he's a mature male on his last stretch of life looking for a female. I'm surprised he even ate most of the time at that stage they're only after spider pussy

how can you tell? I read they live to be quite old, 20 years roughly. He has a big booger ass head on him I know that, head 5x the size of his ass. Pitbull of spiders, lol.

I can tell by the bulbs at the ends of the pedipalps and your own observations about the head to abdomen ratio. The males pretty much stop eating and the ass shrinks. That's why he left...after spider poon

What's so bad about stepping on a frog?

normal people with empathy feel bad for animals that they hurt unintentionally, within reason. A frog is well above what you'd thoughtlessly kill (so like a fly)

It's a tarantula, it doesn't have bones. Maybe he'll be fine after he moults again, that fixes bug injury pretty often

        Anonymous

could he force himself to molt from possible injury? if so maybe I should bring him inside where its warm at night.

Maybe bring him inside anyway if you're worried about the cold. Lotta trolling in this thread but it's good that you care, spiders are cool.

he standing right on my back step when I went outside, I mean the first step. I reaaaaaalllllly hate this cause I am a total fren of spiders, I never kill spiders I always relocate them outside and to have such a cool fren come visit just eats me up that I stepped on it 🙁 I actually teared up when I realized I probably killed it, but it is still alive but it doesnt want to move much. It got really cold last night, like 50 degrees so i put a blanket on it for the night, its still alive today but it doesn't seem to be recovering.

    GOD DAMN IT!
