A fox killed one of our chickens in broad daylight while I was gardening. I have traps now to try and catch it. I live in a dense country area and relocating it wouldn't be an issue. I have most of my family saying kill it and a few of them saying relocate it.

Would you personally kill the fox or relocate it far away? I can also call Animal Control and let them euthanize it if I'm not up for the task of shooting it myself, but it's still a "death" option.

    Domesticate.
It will spend the rest of its life near your chickens, but unable to eat them.

better secure your chickens and leave offerings of eggs to the fox so it leaves them alone

capture it and hatefrick it if female, and release it into a government building if male

It might have kits in a burrow somewhere that you're dooming to starvation if you do anything about it. I'd suggest watching your birds more carefully instead.

relocating it just shifts the problem onto someone else, it doesn't solve anything in the greater scheme

prevent them access from your birds grazing area and get a dog to chase them away

secure your chickens, fox just gave you a free penetration test to learn from. let it go so it can be disappointed that there won't be any more easy meals if it comes back

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animals_by_number_of_neurons

Red foxes have 50% more neurons than cats. They're intelligent animals. Why would you want to kill one?

      Anonymous

this list has notoriously stupid animals, like the barn owl, rhea and emu, above smart animals like the octopus. clearly number of neurons isn't everything.

the way he talks about owls being dumb
they aren't dumb at all, they just aren't as intelligent as crows and because there's a bit of a western culture folk idea of the 'wise owl' (similar to 'elephants never forget') every spastic reddit moron loves to point out
            >hurr durr DAE owls really dumb cause
            parrots!!!!!!!!
the same way they take odd sea creatures and go
            >OCTOPUSSY SO SMART IT CAN DO moronic TASK THAT A HOUSEMOUSE CAN IN A LAB BUT ITS SMART CAUSE IT LOOKS FUNNY!!!!!!!!

That guy listed neurons in entire nervous system which hugely benefits large animals which is a bad indicator of intelligence
That said, if you list them by number of neurons in the forebrain (a better detector of intelligence that accurately shows humans highest alongside dolphins, orca etc. rather than just elephants and large whales) the Fox still comes out about 50% higher than the domestic cat
Suggesting but not proving it's a more intelligent species

If you're worried about your livestock being predated on, you should focus on securing your enclosures.

      No. Wrong. Both of you.

Industrialization is a nightmare that has to be confronted as if it could ever be made to end, and without being unfairly beholden to the whims of private farms (end the electoral college), the state must facilitate small scale agriculture, up to and including compensation for lost livestock.

Humanity must be brought to a population of below 500m

There's no reason it should die. It's just doing fox things. Label your chickens better so it knows or secure them in the house if you don't want a carnivore to eat them. Your fault here, really.
